Re: Cured?

There isn't one formula for this that fits us all.

HER2's are a somewhat younger group than the group with common bc. The more risk factors one has and the younger one is at the time of diagnosis, the longer and more intensively one should be monitored because the treatments are less likely to be effective for that age group.

Herceptin has changed things to some degree, but the common use of it is still so recent that they are still acquiring the information about recurrence and time intervals for that.

Re: Cured?

mimi1952,

As a two time breast cancer survivor whose recurrence had been overlooked for 3, 4 years, I would caution against the 'blanketed' notion about 'cure' and urge everyone be vigilant by paying attention to her/his own health condition.

In addition, (not intending to scare/frighten anyone), those of us who have breast cancer is more likely (than the ones who've never been diagnosed with cancer) to have other types of cancer down the road (especially if there are other family cancer incidents.) Cancer happens when our own cell repairing mechanism has mal-functioned (either because of a genetic defect or environmental damage, or both) So if cancer appears in one organ, we are at higher risk (compared to those who have never had cancer) getting other types of cancer. [Quoted from one of my neurosurgeons.]

Life is full of different treacheries. We don't think about getting hit by the cars everytime we walk across street even though there are people getting hit everyday. But we certainly will be more cautious than others if we'd been hit once, however minor the injury might be ...

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I am very grateful for the time I have had and just want to keep feeling as proactive as I can be. I don't dwell, but I also want to try anything I can!!!! I love this sight because I feel so up to date with the latest trials and vaccine news.
