re: sweats & flashes

never had them before chemo. i was pre-menopausal, chemo plunged me into chemo-pause. i finally got control over the sweats & flashes with neurontin. but that all changed when i had to start tamoxifen in april. the sweats exploded on me worse than ever and i was distraught. then i started on effexor a little over a month ago and while i am not cured of night sweats & hot flashes, i am certainly improved. before effexor i was having dozens of flashes a day, and all intense. now i can live with it. i also dropped 5+ lbs in the time since i started effexor and have more energy so count me a fan! valerie

I never had these either until chemo, herceptin?? Like Valerie, I was not menopausal until chemo--sent me into chemopause as well. I still sweat a lot but no longer have the flashes. I was given Cymbalta since they don't want me to take hormones. It helped but not much. Of course the Cymbalta helps with depression too. They have now added Abilify to the Cymbalta and I'm happy to report that I'm flash free for the first time since chemo.

I still sweat profusely (not at night now though) but did that before menopause.

hi vicky - i bet your heat wave has also relented because you are ER- and don't have to take tamoxifen. that stuff wreaks havoc, i find. doesn't help that this has been a summer in new england much over 90 degrees and terribly humid. i never liked AC before but now know that if it didn't exist i'd be miserable. the other day i recalled that i used to collect antique fans so i think i'm going to keep the smallest of them in my purse and whip it out a la scarlett o'hara when the going gets hot. i'm really glad you beat the heat, you've been through enough. valerie
