Hi, kathyG. here, I have a daughter, Holly, with CML Leukemia and she wants to find out a recommended diet for herself. She has asked her onc several times but he has not sent her to a nutritionist. Any suggestions for a website or nutritional onc in central NJ?
I also need some advice for myself as a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient ER+ 90%,R+ 70%, Ki+ 25% Her2 +++ and Grade 3 tumor, stage 1. We both also have diabetes and are severly overweight, in the 300# range.
Would appreciate any help we can get.

Hi KathyG,

Below is what I've found after a Yahoo search:

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) occurs mainly in adults. .... Diet has very limited or no effect, although eating more vegetables may confer a small ...

My mother adopted a vegetarian diet + multivitamin + an egg and a glass of milk a day in her early 60's. She trimmed down quite a bit within a few years and has been maintaining a 'good' weight. She's a 13-year Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma now at age 87 (turning 88 in a couple of months.) She has resumed regular diet since her NHL diagnosis.

'I think' walking 30 minutes a day is a good way to try. Once it becomes a routine, you can increase the speed to burn more calories. Eating a lot of watermelon seems to decrease my appetite quite a bit - though I need to gain instead of lose weight. Since many vegetables/fruits contain phytochemicals and exercise increases the release of endorphin, I'd think a vegetarian diet + regular exercise is the way to go.

KathyG, I would also recommend you find a Registered Dietitian specializing in oncology in your area. You can do so by visiting www.eatright.org (http://www.eatright.org) and click on Find a Registered Dietitian. Best wishes.
