Scientists sometimes are too 'focused'.

My common sense tells me that since cancer has a lot to do with our genetics, the reason why there are more incidents in modern time, besides environment (man-made)factors, is because more 'unfit' fetus (such as myself :) have survived the 'natural selection' process. These 'survivors' have more health problems and cancer incidents.

Without modern medicine, I would have died soon after my premature birth. There would have been one less case of breast cancer, one less case of brain tumor, one less case of the mysterious 'erythema nodosum'...

There are legends in many civilizations mentioning ancestors that had lived 'hundreds of years'. ('Peng Tsu' - Ancestor Peng - supposedly was 800 years old before he died. Other more familiar stories are recorded in the Old Testament and other religious texts.)

Immunization is another factor that has prevented the natural 'weeding' process. Egyptian kings lived an average of 30, 40 years. It's not surprising that no cancer was found.
