No End To All The Bills

Today I'm sitting at the table with bills all around me. I live by myself and do not feel able to work. I am receiving social security disability. Almost half my income goes to pay my medical insurance. I will not qualify for medicare until the middle of 2009. I am struggling to live, but how will I take care of myself financially. Before I can get one bill paid, here comes 2 or 3 new bills. I don't mean to complain but am having one of those moments when it feels like I am drowning.

Sheila, I know what you are saying. I support my family (husband & granddaughter) and have those feelings myself each month. I don't have an answer, but keep being told that there are people and places that can help with medical bills. I grew up in a family that taught me to "do it all" so I continue to do that. But, as I get further from diagnosis and slide into that place that Sassy has just described, I realize that part of independence is knowing when to ask for help. Maryann has helped to teach me that through her story. I just know that stress is my worst enemy...even more so than bc. I can do what I am able, but I can also ask for help & advice.
I'm trusting that someone will send some specific tips and ideas to you to get things started. You continue to fight a hard battle and make us proud to know you!!!

Dear Sheila,

I've read here that contacting the American Cancer Society might be of help. Also, I am a volunteer for the American Cancer Society - participating in the Reach For Recovery program and during our training we were told to tell the people we have contact with that the American Cancer Society has resources to give help to them.

Thanks for listening. Last nite, I was just having one of those pity party moments. I have been out of work over a year and I sometimes miss having a job. I will try to work on my budget a little better and cut down on worrying about all the ----what ifs that life throws at you. Thanks for letting me have a good place to vent. Tuesday will be my 4th ixempra treatment. Just think, just 3 more treatments and I can begin the "growing of the hair".

I know that some places will let you make payments, and some hospitals will let you set up payments or will even write off some or all of your bill, depending on your income. You have to ask though. Contact the social worker at you hospital or facility.
There are also some charities that will help. Ask your local American Cancer Society chapter about financial help. Contact the Susan G. Komen foundation. I have read that they will also help pay for treatment.
Your Onc may also be willing to write off some of the cost of your treatment.
Also see what help may be available through the manufacturer of your CA drug. Most of them have some sort of plan that will help you pay for the meds, or get it at no charge.
