Am new to this group and will be starting herceptin soon. Has anyone had herception and radiation at the same time or does anyone know if this is standard procedure. I will have 33 rads which will overlap with herceptin which is weekly.
Stage I Grade 3 ER+PR- Her 2 positive No Nodes positive
Thanks so much

Patb, I have had this combination, as have a number of others on this board. Here is a link to an article posted in the Articles of Interest Forum that explains the synergy between the two treatments: http://her2support.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=25820&referrerid=1173

Good luck with your treatments,

Dear Hopeful
Thanks for your reply. I read and printed the entire article which was rather confusing to me, does it say it is good to do it this way or not? Thanks again, so new to this.

I did T & H prior to rads and continued H during rads. I know taxol sensitizes the cell to rads, Your Docs want the best outcome. Hang in there.BB

Patb, Herceptin is thought to sensitize the cancer cells to the radiation treatment, so the radiation treatment becomes more effective. I had Herceptin every three weeks; there are some on this board who reported that it is better to have the Herceptin weekly during radiation, as you will be. Her2+ has a notorious reputation of conferring resistance to a number of therapies, including radiation therapy. I felt very fortunate to be able to combine the two. As far as I could tell, the Herceptin did not exacerbate the radiation side effects, or vice versa. It went pretty easily.

Pat,

I had Herceptin weekly until after radiation was complete, then switched to three week Herceptin.
