Before Herceptin, the prognosis for women with HER2 postive breast cancer wasn't good. Now that we have Herceptin, even us early stage patients have a gift of prevention of reoccurance.

I would suggest posting this on the main board for other responses.

JUST TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME. I'VE BEEN ON THIS ROAD FOR THE PAST 10 MONTHS. I'VE HAD CHEMO (A/C), SURGERY (MASTECTOMY), MORE CHEMO (TAXOTERE), RADS & NOW HERCEPTIN. MANY STRONG, BRAVE WOMEN HAVE WALKED THIS ROAD AHEAD OF US AND YOU CAN READ MANY POSTS BY THEM ON THIS WEBSITE. I AM AMAZED AT THE WOMEN ON THIS SITE. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW STRONG YOU ARE UNTIL YOUR TESTED. I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST, I KNOW THIS IS VERY SCARY BUT ALWAYS KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONE. TAKE CARE SHEILA

Herceptin is a good drug. Before Herceptin the prognosis for Her2+ women was worse than for those who were Her2-, but plenty of Her2+ women survived without a recurrence. When I was diagnosed, I felt Terror with a capital T. It's normal to be afraid. I agree that you should post your message to the main board.

Hi Babycat,

I'm sorry that you had to join our club, but so glad that you found us in your journey through cyberspace.

There is a lot of hope with her2 breast cancer, and since the use of Herceptin is so new with early-stage breast cancer patients, there is a lot of outdated information out there. We're still too far from a cure for my tastse, but there certainly is a lot more hope.

Here's a quote from the head of breast cancer oncology at Dana-Farber in Boston (taken from the New York Times)

"Dr. Winer, who has consulted for GlaxoSmithKline, predicted at a symposium here that death from the type of breast cancer treated with Herceptin and Tykerb, known as Her-2 positive, would be eliminated within 10 years. In an interview, he conceded that other drugs would have to be developed, but said he was confident they would be."

I have been on this road for over a year now. Chemo and treatment is not fun, but it was do-able.

Good luck with everything.

Jen

hey cat, I think you can just plain try googling the lympho... or somewhere on this site's homepage there is a good link to interpreting your path report. If you're HER+, herceptin is good. If you are very early stage, you may try the oncotype test to decide how much treatment is right. I guess you have to look inside yourself to see how much you are willing to risk for what gain, and what insurance will pay for. Short term, most everyone does fine with chemo, etc. So best of luck, we'll be here for you. Bev
