When you get your herceptin, do you need to get a saline bag along with it? I usually get one and finish it but this week our clinic was very busy and they just gave me the herceptin bag and just a small amount from the saline bag and said I was done.Do you think it makes a difference? I have never had any extra saline after my herceptin...& I have been getting it 2 years.

I have never gotten any extra saline (except for the IV rinse at the very end) no matter if I was on the every week or every 3 week routine.

Most of the time I do not get the whole bag. I am told by the nurses the reason I don't is they know I do drink lots of water the day of and the day after receiving the Herceptin. I always carry a filtered water bottle with me. It is very important to drink lots of water to get the Herceptin out of the kidneys so the oncology nurses tell us patients. If a patient says they don't drink plenty of water for whatever reason they will make sure they give all the saline. hugs, Sandy

Hi -
Talking Herceptin maintenance only.
I used to get a larger bag and they would not use it all. Some at the beginning and some at the end or between drugs, if that was the case.

Lately I have been having a smaller bag, but I get almost all of it. I also drink water during my treatment and after.

The "rinse" can last up to 5 min to finish the smaller bag of saline. This is always more than just to flush the line and give me the last of the drug.

I have been treated for BC for 2 years now. When I first started weekly Herceptin in '03, they would set me up with a smaller bag of saline, either simultaneously or prior to Herceptin. I noticed that the standard size has been the larger one lately, I think ever since the beginning of '05. I almost never fully consume my saline bags, small or large.
