The Primary Therapy in Early Breast Cancer conference took place a few weeks ago
in St. Gallen. Physicians and experts from all over the world met in Switzerland
to discuss the latest work that's being done in the field.
One of the main presentations was the BIG (Breast International Group) 1-98
study, the first direct comparison of Femara (chemical name: letrozole) and
tamoxifen (brand name: Nolvadex) during the first five years after surgery. The
27-country study of more than 8,000 hormone-receptor-positive postmenopausal
women found that Femara reduced the risk of the cancer coming back by 19% more
than tamoxifen, and also lengthened disease-free survival.
The St. Gallen Conference also covered many other important topics. There were
presentations on the frequency and dose of chemotherapy regimens, the latest
about HER2+ cancers, radio-guided sentinel lymph node dissection, several
sessions on DCIS, and information on follow-up care for women with early stage
disease.
For a discussion of these important questions and more, join us next Wednesday
February 16th, between 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST)*, for
this month's Ask-the-Expert Online Conference: Primary Therapy of Early Breast
Cancer from St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Cooperative Oncology Group (a past chairman of the breast committee) and
National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. He is a member of the
